Infrared Sauna Our sauna is a Far Infrared sauna (FIRS). Read more about FIRS in an article on this site.

Sherry A. Rogers, M.D., author of Detoxify or Die, advocates the use of an infrared sauna to sweat out toxins from deep within body tissues. According to Dr. Rogers, the infrared sauna is far safer and infinitely more tolerable than a standard sauna, because it uses a heat energy that penetrates tissues, triggering mobilization of chemicals from fat storage beneath the skin, directly into the sweat. This activating penetration allows for a much lower overall temperature to be used, one that is enjoyable and not torture.

Dr. Rogers further says, “I’m convinced that the far infrared sauna is something that everyone should do to restore health, and then continue to do on a less frequent basis to maintain the “cleaned out” state for the rest of their lives. It’s therapeutic as well as prophylatic.”

The effects of the sauna are numerous and varied.

During a 10-20 minute sauna session, your heart rate increases by 50-75%. This provides the same metabolic result as physical exercise. The increased cardiac load is the equivalent to a brisk walk. There is a nominal effect on blood pressure because the heat also causes blood vessels in skin to expand to accommodate increased blood flow. Blood vessels become more flexible and there is increased circulation to the extremities. During a sauna, blood flow to the skin increases to as high as 50-70% of cardiac output (compared to the standard 5-10%). This brings nutrients to subcutaneous (beneath the skin) and surface tissue resulting in glowing healthy skin.

Saunas induce sweating to provide a comprehensive cleansing of the skin and sweat glands. Skin is the largest organ in the body. 30% of body wastes are passed through the skin. Profuse sweating enhances the detoxifying capacity of the skin by opening pores and flushing impurities from the body. When taking a sauna, skin temperature rises to 40°C (104°F) and internal body temperature rises to about 38°C (100.4°F). Exposure to the high heat creates an artificial fever state. Fever is part of the body’s natural healing process. Fever stimulates the immune system resulting in increased production of disease fighting white blood cells, antibodies and interferon (an anti viral protein with cancer fighting capability).

Another aspect of the sauna that needs to be considered is your mental state prior to taking one. Many people attest to the healing powers of the sauna concerning mental depression and anxiety. They say that after leaving the sauna, the mind is in a relaxed, lucid state, free of the worries of the everyday world. Also, when the body feels soothed and energized, the mind and emotions often follow suit.

Expel Toxins

Detoxification, toxins such as sodium, alcohol, nicotine and carcinogenic heavy metals (cadmium, lead, zinc and nickel) and mercury accumulate in the body during modern daily life. Infrared heat therapy stimulates sweat glands that cleanse and detoxify skin.

Reduce Stress

Infrared heat therapy loosens the muscle and relaxes the body prior to a massage. Many massage therapists use infrared heat to provide more through and effective treatment.

Benefit Your Skin

Infrared heat improves circulation, expels dirt and chemicals and removes dead cells on the surface of the skin. All of these benefits lead to a more soft and firm complexion. It also reduces wrinkling associated with aging.

Weight Control

Perspiring is part of the complex thermoregulatory process of the body that increases the heart rate, cardiac output and metabolic rate. The process requires a large amount of the energy and reduces moisture, salts and subcutaneous fat. Fat becomes soluble at 42 deg. C and the body sweats out the fats and toxins.

Pain Relief

Fir heat relieves pain by expanding blood vessels and increasing circulation. Better circulation allows more oxygen to reach injured areas of the body and helps reduce pain and speed up the healing process. Many People use Fir heat as a successful treatment for arthritis, muscle spasms and rheumatism.

Provides the Same Effects as Exercise

The heart receives a workout similar to a 6 mile run in a 20-30 minute sauna session by perspiring the same amount. Infrared saunas are perfect for those that do not have time for regular exercise or suffer from injuries that inhabit rigorous activity.

Improved immune system

During a fever, the body heats up to eliminate viruses and attack foreign agents. Subsequently, the body wards off invading organisms much more easily because the immune system is activated consistently by the “artificial fever”. Recent studies also show that colds and flu-like illnesses are reduced dramatically if treated in early stages with sauna therapy.
